TopFreeClasses would like to welcome all of our newest visitors and followers – March has been amazing, and we're looking forward to an equally amazing April! Our course offerings are growing every week, and the variety is staggering. It looks like more and more colleges and universities are taking advantage of all that edX, Coursera, and other MOOC platforms have to offer. Let's take a closer look at a small sampling of what will be available in the next month.
Making a difference in the world is always in fashion, and what better way to maximize your giving potential than by taking a course called Giving with Purpose? Offered by the Learning by Giving Foundation with support from Northeastern University, Giving with Purpose is a six-session open course designed to help students to become more purposeful and effective charitable donors. Through this course, students take a closer look at the art of philanthropy and learn to engage more effectively with nonprofit organizations in their communities. While the material will be challenging, the only prerequisite is "interest in the nonprofit sector and charitable giving." Instructed/facilitated by Rebecca Riccio, director of the Social Impact Lab at Northeastern University, Giving with Purpose will enable students to tap into Riccio's twenty years of experience in working with a broad range of local, national, and international nonprofit organizations. More than lectures and discussions, this edX course features interviews with such prominent philanthropists as Warren Buffett, Cal Ripken, Jr., and Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben and Jerry fame. Best of all: $100,000 or more will be donated to the organizations ranked highest by students using a peer-review selection process based on concepts presented in the course. Sounds like a win-win situation for students, givers and recipients alike!
On the less feel-good side of things is the topic of cybercrime, covered in depth by the University of London's open course Malicious Software and its Underground Economy: Two Sides to Every Story. Taught by Lorenzo Cavallaro at the University, this Coursera MOOC explores the dark side of computing: the profitable but illegal business that takes place when criminals infiltrate user and enterprise hosts and steal private, financial, and intellectual property data. In a mere six weeks, students will learn the inner workings of traditional and mobile malware, how they can be analyzed and detected, and what drives the vast underground ecosystem that sustains cybercrime. Dr. Cavallaro's background in systems dependability and malware analysis will ensure a robust and challenging course; for this reason, it is recommended that prospective students of Malicious Software and its Underground Economy: Two Sides to Every Story have fairly strong prior knowledge in the areas of computing and operating systems. Interestingly, this thoroughly modern course is brought to us by the University of London International Programmes, an educational system established back in 1858 as the world's oldest provider of flexible learning.
We're really just scratching the surface here, as April will be bringing many new MOOCs to TopFreeClasses.
